Our guide will accompany you to the heart of this magnificent city; Zadar, which began as a small settlement about three thousand years ago, is today the epicenter of the Dalmatian culture. The old town of Zadar is a network of narrow streets, numerous monuments, the Roman forum and the walls that surround the city.
Our tour begins with a visit to the cathedral of Santa Anastasia, whose sarcophagus is in the apse, at the top of the altar. This cathedral is one of the great works of the Romanesque.
Continuing our walk, we will contemplate the church of San Donatus; There is a belief that it was built by Bishop San Donatus in the ninth century; It is the most architecturally impressive church in the eastern Adriatic with its circular plan and the three naves.
To the east, we will visit the church of San Mary; Romanesque style work of the twelfth century and built by the Hungarian-Croatian king Koloman; The church has a bell tower, and on the top floor is the convent; with its rooms open to the public, and containing a collection of relics and other valuable items.
Continuing with our tour, we will have the possibility to visit the permanent exhibition of religious art, called “The Gold and Silver of Zadar”; the exhibition consists of works of gold and silver that go, from the eighth century to the baroque; We will also find exhibits by the famous writer Miroslav Krleza.
During our route we will pass by the Sun Salutation, the work of the architect Nikola Basic; This curious object consists of a circle of glass whose shape and composition allow it to absorb sunlight during the day; this light at night transforms into an impressive play of lights.
We will also visit other works of the same architect as well: “The sea organ”; It is an experimental musical instrument; It consists of hollow tubes, camouflaged by marble steps and, in contact with the waves of the sea, emits musical notes. This work gives the coast of Zadar a modern and elegant image and at the same time provides both citizens and tourists, a place of rest and relaxation to contemplate the sea.
Our tour ends with a Marascino liquor tasting (typical Zadar liquor) that we can enjoy at the Arsenal Tavern; located in the old town of Zadar, near the port. Marascino liquor has a tradition of almost 400 years, it is the best known in Dalmatia; It is a sweet and sour liqueur, seasoned with Marasca cherries; This type of cherries, grow in Dalmatia and mostly, around the city of Zadar.
