Port Overview

The Port of Taranto, located on the Ionian coast of southern Italy in the region of Puglia, is a deep-water commercial and naval port that has recently re-emerged as a destination for cruise ships. Historically focused on industrial and military operations, the port is now undergoing transformation to accommodate tourism and cruise traffic. Cruise vessels dock at the dedicated cruise quay, situated near the historic city center, allowing passengers to explore Taranto’s unique blend of ancient Greek, Roman, and medieval heritage. The city offers cultural attractions such as the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto (MArTA), the Aragonese Castle, and the old town district with its narrow alleys and coastal charm. Though cruise infrastructure is still developing, the port provides essential passenger services including security, local transportation, and access to guided excursions. Taranto also serves as a gateway to lesser-known destinations in Puglia and Basilicata, including Matera and the Trulli of Alberobello. Regional authorities and port stakeholders continue to invest in upgrading facilities and promoting Taranto as an emerging cruise destination, offering an authentic and less commercialized alternative to more established Mediterranean ports.
