Port Overview

The Port of La Spezia, situated on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy, is a key cruise gateway to the Italian Riviera and the world-famous Cinque Terre region. It has grown significantly in recent years as a major stop for Mediterranean cruise itineraries, welcoming both large cruise ships and luxury vessels.

Cruise ships dock at the Molo Garibaldi terminal, which is adjacent to the city center and within walking distance of La Spezia Centrale train station. This convenient access makes La Spezia an ideal departure point for shore excursions to:

  • Cinque Terre National Park
  • Portovenere
  • Lucca and Pisa
  • Florence (around 2 hours by train or bus)

The cruise terminal offers modern passenger facilities, including customs, immigration, baggage handling, and organized excursion services. Shuttle buses are typically provided for easy access between ship and terminal or onward to the train station.

Though often overshadowed by nearby attractions, La Spezia itself offers museums, a seafront promenade, local cuisine, and access to ferries serving the Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of Poets).

Port authorities have invested heavily in infrastructure to expand cruise capacity, improve terminal efficiency, and reduce environmental impact through shore power and sustainable practices. La Spezia is becoming an increasingly important embarkation and disembarkation port, particularly for itineraries focused on northern and central Italy.
