Port Overview
The Port of Civitavecchia, often referred to as the “Port of Rome,” is one of the busiest and most strategically important cruise ports in the Mediterranean. Located about 70 kilometers northwest of the Italian capital, it serves as the primary gateway for cruise passengers visiting Rome and central Italy. The port handles a large volume of cruise traffic year-round and is frequently used as both a port of call and an embarkation or disembarkation point. Cruise ships dock at well-equipped terminals that offer modern passenger services, including customs, baggage handling, tourist information, and ground transportation. While the city of Civitavecchia itself has a pleasant seafront and a historic center worth exploring, most cruise passengers opt for full-day excursions to Rome, which can be reached in approximately 1.5 hours by train, bus, or private transfer. Popular attractions include the Colosseum, Vatican City, the Roman Forum, and Trevi Fountain. Port authorities continue to invest in infrastructure upgrades to enhance efficiency and comfort, positioning Civitavecchia as a central hub for Mediterranean cruising and the most important maritime link to Rome’s cultural and historical treasures.
