Chios

Port Overview
Chios, the fifth-largest Greek island, is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea and offers a unique blend of medieval heritage, natural beauty, and authentic island life. The island’s main port, located in Chios Town, serves as a gateway for both ferry and cruise traffic and is increasingly featured on small to mid-sized cruise itineraries seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations in the Aegean.

Cruise ships typically dock at the main quay of Chios Port, just steps away from the town center. The location offers easy walking access to shops, cafes, the waterfront promenade, and local museums such as the Byzantine Museum and the Argenti Folk Art Museum. The nearby castle of Chios, with its Genoese architecture, adds historical charm right at the port’s doorstep.

While port facilities are modest, they include essential services such as customs, immigration, tourist information, and local transport connections. Shore excursions often take passengers to the mastic villages of southern Chios—such as Pyrgi and Mesta—known for their distinctive architecture and traditional production of mastiha, a unique resin with UNESCO recognition. Other popular sites include the Nea Moni Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the island’s beaches and countryside.

Chios offers a quiet, culturally rich alternative to more commercial cruise ports. Local authorities are continuing to develop the island’s cruise infrastructure and promote its authentic tourism offerings, positioning Chios as a boutique destination in the North Aegean.
